Week 1 of Fun With Tower Garden and Garden Care

After one week of growth, the Tower Garden is taking shape.  The cucumber and zucchini have the most growth followed by the watermelon, tomatoes and spinach.  Mints and peppers are showing some growth as well.  Here's the just planted to Week 1 comparison.

On the other side of the Tower Garden you can see the watermelon at the bottom and beans just above it growing.  A tiny watermelon has appeared and is starting to develop.  There are also lots of small tomatoes on the Cherry Tomato plants and one on the Sun-dried tomatoes.

The most important part of plant care is checking the water level twice a week when hot like it already is here in Central Texas or when you plants are large.  Since it had dropped an inch in about 4 days, I set out two buckets for a couple of days to let the chlorine disperse. Then added about 4 gallons to make up the loss by Day 6.

The other important plant care is checking and adjusting the pH.  It had fallen out of the 5.5-6.5 operating range to 7 by Day 4 so I adjusted it down with the adjustment -pH acid adjustment provided.  About 1.5 teaspoons were needed to get it down to the suggested 5.5.  On Day 6 after adding water and more Tonic 100ml each (A and B) to 5 gallons of water, I checked the pH again and adjusted slightly.  The pH tester, pH adjusters, and tonic come with the Tower Garden.

The small name plate cover on the bottom reservoir lid can be removed to check on root growth and trim away roots that start growing into the water.  The will prevent the pump from getting plugged.

Next week I will update with Week 2 pictures and talk about trimming plants.  Right now I'm enjoying the fresh mint leaves in my mint iced tea - delicious!  They are growing fast and this "trimming" helps to thicken the growth.
