Plants of the "Fun With" Tower Garden

Today I'm introducing you to the 20 plants in the Tower Garden.  Most are already getting larger (Day 5 since planted) and I will compare their growth and talk about their care in my next blog entry at one week since planting.

I placed the 20 plants in rows to put into the garden.  The heaviest produce on the bottom, then the ones that grow the most and would need the cage to support them and so on until the smallest and lightest (herbs) were at the top. One marigold was selected to keep away insects but some of the plants had two and were divided to take up two spaces, so I ran out of room in the tower and the marigold will be potted separately.

Row 1 is placed at the very bottom so the produce can be supported by the shelf of the Tower Garden's water container.  My selections were two watermelon (Sugar Baby), zucchini squash, and cucumber (Suyo Long).  There were other possibilities, but these were my favorites to eat:

Row 2 - just above the first row included spinach (Red Malabar - a heat tolerant variety), green bean, and two tomatoes:  Sun-Dried and Red Cherry:

Row 3 - Next are more tomatoes.  I unintentionally bought two Red Cherry tomatoes and one divided into two so now I have three.  I placed them above the other tomatoes so they are all on the same side and the tower can be rotated to give them maximum sun.  Also on Row 3 is spearmint and basil - both spread a lot and will need support of the Tower Garden's surrounding cage:

Row 4 can still get cage support and is where I placed three peppers (Anaheim, Chilpequin, and California Wonder - a yellow bell pepper) and one Large Cherry tomato (pictured center):

Row 5 at the top contains my herbs and an everbearing strawberry called Berries Galore (pictured center) that promises to produce all summer.  The others are Italian Parsley (curly was not recommended for the tower), peppermint, and garlic chives (not pictured):

Now that you have met the plants. Sign up on the right to receive emails of the blog so you can watch them grow.
