Week 1 of Fun With Tower Garden and Garden Care

After one week of growth, the Tower Garden is taking shape.  The cucumber and zucchini have the most growth followed by the watermelon, tomatoes and spinach.  Mints and peppers are showing some growth as well.  Here's the just planted to Week 1 comparison.

On the other side of the Tower Garden you can see the watermelon at the bottom and beans just above it growing.  A tiny watermelon has appeared and is starting to develop.  There are also lots of small tomatoes on the Cherry Tomato plants and one on the Sun-dried tomatoes.

The most important part of plant care is checking the water level twice a week when hot like it already is here in Central Texas or when you plants are large.  Since it had dropped an inch in about 4 days, I set out two buckets for a couple of days to let the chlorine disperse. Then added about 4 gallons to make up the loss by Day 6.

The other important plant care is checking and adjusting the pH.  It had fallen out of the 5.5-6.5 operating range to 7 by Day 4 so I adjusted it down with the adjustment -pH acid adjustment provided.  About 1.5 teaspoons were needed to get it down to the suggested 5.5.  On Day 6 after adding water and more Tonic 100ml each (A and B) to 5 gallons of water, I checked the pH again and adjusted slightly.  The pH tester, pH adjusters, and tonic come with the Tower Garden.

The small name plate cover on the bottom reservoir lid can be removed to check on root growth and trim away roots that start growing into the water.  The will prevent the pump from getting plugged.

Next week I will update with Week 2 pictures and talk about trimming plants.  Right now I'm enjoying the fresh mint leaves in my mint iced tea - delicious!  They are growing fast and this "trimming" helps to thicken the growth.

Day 3 of Fun With Tower Garden

The day started with meeting my Juice Plus friend Gina and shopping for appropriate plants - small and sturdy vegetables, herbs and fruits.  More on my selections in my next blog entry.

The tower had been circulating for two days with the top off to dissipate the chlorine in the water.  Before adding the plants, I added the appropriate amount of tonic to feed the plants and tested the pH.  The 2 tonics, 2 pH adjustors, and pH test kit came with my tower garden.

The rock wool was cut in half and placed in declorinated water before placing around the plants and the net pots needed to be adjusted to fit the roots.  I clipped off some of the bottom spokes with nail clippers to make room for the roots.  Better to do this individually with each plant as the root structures and hole size needed varied.

I decided to go with small starter plants since it is too hot already here in Austin, Texas to start with seeds.  I used 2 large buckets with declorinated water (set out for 2 days to let the chlorine dissipate) and 2 smaller containers with hose water to wash off the roots.  I removed as much soil as possible into a large pot before washing first in the small pots, then in the large buckets.

After washing the plant roots, the top of the exposed roots were sandwiched between two pieces of wet rock wool, affixed with a rubber band, and placed in a net pot with spokes at the bottom removed to accommodate the roots.

Although washing the plants was a lot of work, compared to digging up even a small vegetable garden this was a real breeze.  The next day we added the optional cage to hold the tomatoes and larger crops.

Day 1 of Fun With Tower Garden

Three packages arrived today:  the Tower Garden kit, the optional dolly, the optional cage for supporting larger plants (tomatoes, beans, melons).

No tools were required to assemble the tower, only a wrench was needed for the optional dolly.

Tower assembly was easy alternating section position added to the two rods with pump in tank for circulation of water and nutrients.  Everything comes in the kit including the seeds!
